Cufflinks are not much worn today
except by salesmen who travel in twos
like bookends, either side of their product.
They arrive unannounced the first time, but
as though expected, which, resignedly, they are.
The second time, and thereafter, they arrive
like long-lost shipmates back from Brazil.
Who the bookends will be this time, we know not.
But we know they will be buffed to a high shine,
with sideburns razor-cut and suits they deeply value
as, in the sports bar, they talk about receptionists
in the crudest of terms.
