The beauty of America
as foreseen by the Founding Fathers
is that, just as you decide
you'll have to pack it up,
all the many maniacs
furiously manage to negate each other,
leaving the rest of us,
buffeted, frazzled, stressed
and looking like 200,000,000
wet cats.
Then we
(excluding only the enthusiasts)
together roll our eyes and pick
yet another pride of roaring lions
who become both stymied and secure,
mewing noncommittal platitudes
as we age and have our children
and our surgeries and become,
finally,
someone else's worries.
And yet this ungainly plod, compared
to knout, fatwa, cleansing flame, or
firing squad, will have to do.
